Candidates for Concert Choir

Candidates for Concert Choir are boys who are working towards becoming full-fledged members of the New Jersey Boychoir. Once a Candidate passes the NJB Standard Repertoire and his Singer-Musicianship Evaluation (SME), he is inducted into NJB as a Jacketed member, earning the right to wear the coveted green NJB Jacket. A boy typically spends one semester as a Candidate, although two semesters are possible depending on progress.  More details about Candidates for Concert Choir

Concert Choir

The Concert Choir is for our youngest Jacketed Trebles, or for older Jacketed Trebles who are not able to commit to the the more rigorous Towne Choir rehearsal and performance schedule. More details about Concert Choir

Towne Choir*

The Towne Choir is for NJB Jacketed Trebles who have an advanced level  of singer-musicianship. Members of Towne Choir are exemplary choristers who are able to consistently attend a second weekly rehearsal, perform more advanced repertoire and commit to a robust performance schedule.  More details about Towne Choir

Altones*

The Altone is a young man who is in the initial stages of the voice change and is unable to successfully sing in his treble voice any longer. Most boychoirs ask a young man to leave once he is unwilling or unable to access his treble voice. At NJB we believe that a young man can successfully sing through voice change if he is willing and is guided carefully. In fact, singing through the onset of the voice change results in wide-ranged tenors and basses.  A young man typically becomes a Altone in the 9th grade, but could be placed in this group as early as 8th grade and as late as 10th grade. Voice assessments are done periodically throughout the semester to monitor an Altone’s  progress. More details about Altones

Candidates for Graduate Choir*

Candidates for Graduate Choir are young men who are far enough along in the voice change that they can sing safely at performance level in the an adult tenor or bass range. Graduate Candidates spend a semester earning the NJB Graduate pin. Candidates rehearse with the Graduate Choir on Saturdays, learning the new repertoire for the current semester. They also rehearse earlier on Saturday mornings during which time they work on passing Candidacy requirements: learning and memorizing the KSB Graduate “Standard Repertoire” (including music and movement).  A young man typically spends one semester as a Graduate Candidate, although more semesters are possible depending on progress.  More details about Candidates for Graduate Choir

Graduate Choir*

The NJB Graduate Choir is made up of high school tenors and basses. They sing an exciting repertoire as an ensemble of young men, and also sing with the KSB Trebles.  More details about Graduate Choir

Chamber Choir*

The Chamber Choir is for Graduates who are exemplary choristers, are able to consistently attend a second weekly rehearsal, perform more advanced repertoire, and commit to a robust performance schedule.    More details about Chamber Choir

*Towne, Graduate and Chamber Choirs and the Altones are not groups being offered in NJB’s inaugural season. They will be offered in subsequent seasons as membership grows.  In the meantime, young men with changing and changed voices are welcome to audition for those same groups in NJB’s cousin choir, the Keystone State Boychoir.
